Justice in Focus: Adamawa Police Launch Manhunt for Killers of Thomas Godwin Zamfara

Authorities in Adamawa State have initiated a full-scale manhunt following the brutal killing of Thomas Godwin, popularly known as Zamfara, a beloved community leader whose death has sent shockwaves across the region.

The incident, described as a targeted attack under alarming circumstances, has sparked outrage and heightened calls for justice and enhanced security measures.

Zamfara, remembered for his warmth, leadership, and dedication to community unity, was ambushed and killed on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, in Hong Local Government Area. The 49-year-old, who served as a Special Adviser to the Governor and the Organizing Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the area, was reportedly beaten with sticks and clubs while riding his motorcycle home.

His death has left residents reeling and prompted an outpouring of grief from friends, political associates, and community members.

The Adamawa State Police Command, through its Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, ANIPR, confirmed the development and assured the public of decisive action. “The Commissioner of Police, CP Dankombo Morris, has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of investigation to carry out a full-scale probe into the incident,” Nguroje stated. He emphasized that the command has deployed significant resources and operational strategies to apprehend the perpetrators, with investigations already yielding promising leads.

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, during a condolence visit to Zamfara’s family in Kala’a on April 19, expressed his administration’s commitment to ensuring justice. “We are beginning to see promising leads, and very soon, the killers will be brought to book,” the governor stated, offering condolences and pledging support to the bereaved family.

The killing has amplified concerns over rising violence in Adamawa, including assassinations, arson, and attacks on farmlands and places of worship. Community leaders and citizens are demanding stronger security measures and accountability to curb the growing unrest. “Zamfara was a unifier, a man who served selflessly. His death must not be in vain,” said Samtanyi Na’ada, an associate of the deceased, in a heartfelt tribute.

As the investigation intensifies, the Adamawa State Police Command has appealed for public cooperation, urging residents to provide any information that could aid in apprehending the culprits. The command’s efforts are part of a broader directive from the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to minimize crime and enhance security across the state, which has seen 148 arrests of suspected kidnappers and armed robbers since January 2025.

Zamfara was laid to rest on April 17 in his hometown of Kala’a, leaving behind a legacy of service and unity. As the manhunt continues, the people of Adamawa remain united in their call for justice, hoping that the perpetrators will be swiftly brought to account to restore peace and security to the state.
