JUST IN: Nationwide Blackout as Nigeria’s National Grid Collapses for the First Time in 2026

Nigeria has been plunged into darkness following a total collapse of the national electricity grid on Friday, marking the first such incident in 2026.

Data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) shows that power generation plummeted to zero megawatts (MW) around 1:00 p.m. local time. Load allocation to all 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) — including Benin, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Abuja, and Yola — also dropped to zero MW, resulting in a widespread blackout affecting millions of households, businesses, and essential services across the country.

The collapse comes just weeks after the last major grid failure on December 29, 2025, which had already disrupted power supply nationwide toward the end of the previous year.

Restoration efforts are reportedly underway, though the timeline for full recovery remains unclear, and some accounts suggest generation has only partially recovered to low levels so far.

This latest blackout has reignited public frustration over the country’s chronic power instability. Social media users and commentators have pointed to recurring patterns, with many questioning why the grid continues to fail despite significant investments and promises of improvement. Critics argue that frequent collapses — over 120 recorded in the past 11 years — reflect deeper systemic issues, including inadequate infrastructure, vandalism, and insufficient funding for maintenance and upgrades.

Power sector experts have long estimated that billions of dollars annually are needed to achieve reliable electricity supply nationwide.

The incident also underscores the growing reliance on alternative sources such as generators and solar systems among Nigerians, as many households and businesses have adapted to inconsistent grid power over the years.
