Former Tottenham star, Matt Doherty has told the club not to go ahead with their decision to announce the sacking of Antonio Conte as their manager this week.

The Republic of Ireland international is hoping Conte, who he described as an ‘unbelievable’ manager, stays with Tottenham for ‘as long as possible.’

Reports in England and beyond say that the hierarchy at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has reached a decision to dismiss the former Inter Milan manager this week.

The decision followed an explosive interview the former Chelsea boss granted after his side’s frustrat ing 3-3 draw with Southampton on Sunday but Doherty, who left Tottenham for Atletico Madrid in January, has defended the Italian boss.

“Look, I hope he stays for a long time at Tottenham,” the Republic of Ireland defender said during the international break.

“He’s an unbelievable coach, an unbelievable manager. He’s completely honest with his players, and has the passion for the whole club.

“For me, I hope Tottenham stick by him and hold onto him for as long as possible. He’s one of the best managers of all time,” he added.
