Sporting Lisbon manager, Ruben Amorim, has given his green light to the Manchester United job.
Amorim is now set to replace Erik ten Hag, who was sacked on Monday, following a 2-1 defeat at West Ham.
He has been linked with succeeding Pep Guardiola at City, principally because Sporting director of football, Hugo Viana, is taking over from Txiki Begiristain at the Etihad at the end of the season.
But it is understood Amorim is not on City’s radar, despite his impressive work at Sporting, leaving the way clear for local rivals United to appoint the 39-year-old.
Sources at City have suggested Amorim’s style of play – he is wedded to a 3-4-3 formation – is not in keeping with their own system and philosophy, hence why he is not on their shortlist.
Guardiola is out of contract at the end of this season and has yet to decide whether to sign an extension or bring to an end his glittering nine-year reign of success at City.
He has so far stay tight-lipped on his future, but the appointment of Viana was seen as the first stepping stone towards Amorim being his potential replacement. However, United now have a clear run following the dismissal of Ten Hag on Monday.
The axe fell on the Dutchman with United down in 14th place in the table following Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham.
