A popular singer, Olugbemiro Tokunbo, aka GT Da Guitarman, has fingered depression and drug abuse as some of the issues causing the death of young artistes.
He told Sunday Scoop, “In the music industry, there are cabals that have positioned themselves on the corridors of fame. Musicians live for the crowd and the applause. Unfortunately, some middlemen have positioned themselves between the people and the musicians. They have monetised the music industry to the point that one cannot be heard until one has a certain amount of money. This puts a lot of pressure on young artistes. When was the last time you heard about a musician ‘blowing up’ from the ghetto without the support of these middlemen, so to speak? Depression is one of the reasons artistes are dying young. Drug abuse is another. The rate of drug abuse in the entertainment industry is ridiculously high.”
The Dreamer singer added that many people had a singular view of reality. According to him, the communal way of doing things had been lost. He said, “People don’t experience the lives of others anymore. They are only stuck in their own worlds. The wisdom of the elderly which could have helped a lot of young people is missing. We don’t have great mentors to mentor young people anymore.”
