Covenant University Emerges as Top Nigerian University in Times Higher World University Rankings

Covenant University, a privately owned institution, has secured the top spot among Nigerian universities in the recently released Times Higher World University Rankings. The University of Ibadan followed closely in second place, while FUTA (Federal University of Technology, Akure) ranked third.

The Times Higher World University ranking considered a total of 1,904 universities from 108 countries and regions. Covenant University, although falling within the global ranking range of 801-1000, still managed to claim the prestigious top position in Nigeria.

This ranking is based on the new WUR 3.0 methodology, which evaluates institutions across five key areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry connections, and international outlook. These factors are critical in determining the overall reputation and performance of a university.

Notably, the University of Lagos and Bayero University, Kano, followed closely behind, securing the fourth and fifth positions in the rankings respectively. It is a remarkable achievement for these universities to be recognized on a global scale for their excellence in academics.

Other Nigerian universities that achieved high rankings include the University of Ilorin, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Afe Babalola University, University of Benin, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Lagos State University, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Obafemi Awolowo University, and the University of Port Harcourt. All of these institutions have shown exemplary performance in various aspects of higher education.

It is noteworthy that among the top 15 universities in Nigeria, nine are located in the South West region, two are in the South East

, two in the South-South, one in the North West, and one in the North Central region. This demonstrates the overall regional distribution of educational institutions in Nigeria.
