Having assumed office only a few months before the commencement of the 2026 Hajj exercise, many wondered whether the new leadership would have sufficient time to make a meaningful impact. Those concerns were quickly laid to rest as the entire operation unfolded with an impressive level of efficiency and professionalism.

Every stage of the exercise—from the inaugural flight to the return of the last batch of pilgrims—was coordinated with remarkable efficiency. I had the privilege of witnessing this remarkable operation firsthand. As one of the stakeholder nominees graciously sponsored by Hajiya Aishat Obi, the Commissioner representing the South-East on the NAHCON Board, I travelled with the Nigerian contingent from 13 May and returned on 5 June 2026. This unique opportunity allowed me to observe not only the spiritual aspect of Hajj but also the enormous administrative efforts that made the exercise successful.

What I experienced throughout the pilgrimage was an organization committed to excellence and genuinely concerned about the comfort and welfare of Nigerian pilgrims.

One of the most commendable aspects of the operation was the quality of accommodation provided. Pilgrims were lodged in comfortable hotels that offered a conducive environment for rest after the physically demanding daily activities. The locations were carefully selected to ensure accessibility and convenience, enabling pilgrims to concentrate on their acts of worship without unnecessary hardship.

The feeding arrangements were equally impressive. Meals were served consistently, hygienically, and in good quality. Throughout the pilgrimage, food distribution was well organized, and many pilgrims expressed satisfaction with both the quality and regularity of the meals. It was evident that considerable effort had gone into selecting competent service providers capable of meeting the needs of thousands of Nigerian pilgrims.

Healthcare services also stood out as one of the strengths of the 2026 Hajj operation. Medical teams remained available around the clock to provide prompt attention whenever the need arose. Clinics were adequately equipped, medications were accessible, and health personnel discharged their duties with professionalism and compassion. Considering the physically demanding nature of Hajj, these medical services contributed immensely to the comfort and safety of pilgrims.

Transportation arrangements within the Holy Land were equally commendable. Despite the complexity of moving millions of pilgrims from across the world, Nigerian pilgrims benefited from well-coordinated transportation that enabled them to perform the various rites with minimal stress and confusion.

Communication between NAHCON officials, state pilgrims’ welfare boards, and pilgrims themselves remained effective throughout the exercise. Information was disseminated promptly, concerns were addressed without unnecessary delays, and officials remained visible and accessible whenever assistance was required.

Another notable feature of the 2026 Hajj exercise was the dedication displayed by NAHCON staff. Behind every successful operation were men and women who worked tirelessly, often sacrificing their own comfort to ensure that pilgrims received the best possible services. Their commitment reflected the leadership style of Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, whose emphasis on teamwork, discipline, and service delivery inspired confidence throughout the Commission.

The success of the operation did not go unnoticed. At the conclusion of the Hajj exercise, several state Muslim Pilgrims’ Welfare Boards considered it necessary to send delegations to the office of Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf to formally commend him for the exceptional leadership demonstrated throughout the exercise. Such commendations are significant because they came from stakeholders who directly participated in the operation and understood the enormous responsibilities associated with organizing Hajj for tens of thousands of Nigerian pilgrims.

It requires effective coordination with Saudi authorities, airlines, healthcare providers, accommodation managers, transport companies, security agencies, and numerous other service providers. As someone privileged to witness the exercise from beginning to end, I can confidently say that the commendations received by Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf were well deserved. The 2026 Hajj operation has undoubtedly established a higher benchmark for future pilgrimages. It has demonstrated that with proper planning, accountability, transparency, and visionary leadership, Nigeria can organize a pilgrimage that earns the confidence and admiration of pilgrims and stakeholders alike.

While every major operation presents opportunities for continuous improvement, the achievements recorded under Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf within only a few months in office deserve recognition. His leadership has inspired renewed confidence in NAHCON and has shown that public institutions can deliver excellent results when guided by competence, integrity, and commitment.
