Liverpool Sack Slot After Poor Title Defence

English Premier League club, Liverpool have parted ways with head coach Arne Slot with immediate effect.

Naija News reports that the Dutch manager leaves Anfield after a turbulent campaign in which the Reds failed to defend their Premier League title.

Slot, who guided Liverpool to the league title in his debut season, exits with one year left on the three-year contract he signed when he joined the club.

Liverpool suffered 12 league defeats in the just-concluded season.

The poor run forced the club to make what it described as a difficult decision, despite Slot delivering Liverpool’s historic 20th English top-flight title.

The Reds also recorded 20 defeats across all competitions this season, reportedly the highest number for a Liverpool manager in a single campaign.

In a joint statement issued on Saturday, Liverpool’s owners thanked Slot for his contribution during his two-year spell in charge.

They praised his professionalism, work ethic and leadership, especially during the difficult period following the death of forward Diogo Jota in a car accident.

“We would like to take this opportunity to place on record our appreciation for Arne, who will always hold a special place in the history of this football club as the coach who delivered Liverpool’s 20th league title,” the statement read.

The club said Slot’s departure was not a reflection of his ability but a decision based on the need for a new direction.

The statement added, “Nevertheless, the conclusion we have come to is built on a belief that the team’s trajectory is best addressed through a change of direction. That does not diminish the work Arne has done here, or the respect we have for him. Nor is it a reflection of his talents. Rather, it is indicative of the need for a different approach.

“Arne leaves with our gratitude, with a Premier League title to his name, and with the knowledge that he and his family will always be welcomed back at Anfield.”
