Lagos launches school arts competition

The Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture has launched the second edition of the Eko Schools Arts and Crafts Competition, themed “This is Lagos!” in a renewed push to harness youth creativity and strengthen the state’s growing creative economy, The PUNCH reports.

Speaking at a press conference in Alausa on Monday, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Bopo Oyekan-Ismaila, described the initiative as a deliberate platform to identify and develop young artistic talent across the state.

She said the competition aligned with the development agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, particularly its focus on entertainment and tourism as drivers of economic growth.

Reflecting on the inaugural edition, Oyekan-Ismaila disclosed that 153 entries were received from students in secondary and tertiary institutions, with nine winners emerging across three categories.

The winners, she noted, benefited from scholarships and increased exposure.

“That success affirmed one truth: Lagos is brimming with creative brilliance. Our young people are ready to lead the creative economy when given the right opportunities,” she said.

She added that the 2026 edition would be expanded to include “structured mentorship from industry professionals, broader industry engagement, internship opportunities and exposure, and increased visibility for participants across digital and physical platforms.”

According to her, the competition was designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical enterprise, equipping participants with relevant skills while promoting the cultural identity of Lagos.

Calling for wider participation, she urged school administrators, parents and guardians to support eligible students, noting that the initiative was aimed at raising “the next generation of artists, innovators, and cultural ambassadors.”

Addressing prospective entrants, she said, “This is your platform. This is your moment. Let your creativity speak. Let your art tell the story of Lagos and open doors to limitless possibilities.”

The ministry announced that registration for the competition opened on May 4 and will close on May 25, 2026.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to the creative sector, Oyekan-Ismaila said: “When creativity thrives, innovation flourishes. When innovation flourishes, economies grow. And when economies grow, the people are healthier and happier.”

She expressed confidence that the second edition would surpass the first in scale and impact, producing talents capable of representing Lagos on the global stage.
