Robert A. Baffert (born January 13, 1953) is an American racehorse trainer. He trained two Triple Crown winners: American Pharoah in 2015 and Justify in 2018. Baffert’s horses have won the Kentucky Derby six times, tying the record for most wins by a trainer. He also holds the record for most Preakness Stakes wins with eight, and has won the Belmont Stakes and Kentucky Oaks three times each. Baffert has received the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Trainer four times. His career has also faced controversy because of repeated drug test failures involving his horses.

Biography and Career

Baffert grew up on a ranch in Nogales, Arizona, where his family raised cattle and chickens. At age 10, his father bought some Quarter Horses, and Baffert began racing them on a dirt track. As a teenager, he worked as a jockey in informal Quarter Horse races near Nogales, earning $100 a day. He later started racing at official tracks and got his first win at age 17 in 1970.

Baffert graduated from the University of Arizona’s Race Track Industry Program with a Bachelor of Science degree. After getting married, he started training quarter horses at a farm in Prescott, Arizona. By age 20, he had built a reputation as a trainer and was hired by others to manage their stables. His first winner was Flipper Star at Rillito Park on January 28, 1979. In the 1980s, Baffert moved to California and worked at Los Alamitos Race Course. He began training Thoroughbreds full-time in 1991 and got his first major win in 1992 with Thirty Slews in the Breeder’s Cup.

Baffert first made a name for himself with less expensive horses such as Silver Charm and Real Quiet, which were bought for $16,500 and $17,000. Fellow trainer D. Wayne Lukas said Baffert’s success comes from his “extraordinary eye for a good horse” and his skill in finding the right opportunities for his horses.

Baffert has been married twice and has five children, four with his first wife, Sherry. He married his second wife, Jill, a former television reporter from Louisville, in 2002. They had a son in 2004. Baffert and his family live in California.

Baffert survived a heart attack in late March 2012 while he was in Dubai preparing Game On Dude for the Dubai World Cup.

After winning the 2015 Belmont, Baffert shared the charities he and his wife Jill support. He was paid $200,000 to let the Burger King mascot stand behind him during the televised Belmont broadcast, after turning down $150,000 for a similar appearance at the Preakness. At the press conference after the Belmont, Baffert announced that he and his wife would donate $50,000 each to the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, the California Retirement Management Account (CARMA), Old Friends Equine, and the Permanently Disabled Jockey’s Fund in memory of Robert Z. “Bobby” Adair. Adair, a friend of Baffert’s and a member of the American Quarter Horse Association Hall of Fame, died on Preakness Day, May 16, 2015, at age 71. Baffert dedicated American Pharoah’s win to Bobby.
