Iran Nobel laureate Narges Mohammadi needs urgent heart treatment in Tehran, brother says

Imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Narges Mohammadi requires urgent specialized medical care for a life-threatening heart condition, her brother, Hamidreza Mohammadi, told Reuters on Monday.

Mohammadi, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her advocacy for women’s rights and the abolition of the death penalty, was moved from prison to a provincial hospital in northwestern Iran on May 1 following a suspected heart attack in late March.

Hamidreza Mohammadi reported that his sister is suffering from severe headaches, nausea, and chest pain. He emphasized that the current facility lacks the resources to treat her properly, stating, “She needs her own doctors who have performed the operations before and know exactly what is wrong with her.” 

Medical experts believe her life is in danger and that she requires at least one month away from prison conditions to receive adequate treatment.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee and Mohammadi’s family have both appealed to Iranian authorities to transfer her to Tehran, where her dedicated medical team is located. Hamidreza noted that the ongoing regional conflicts are being used by authorities to justify increased domestic oppression and executions.

 “The world should wake up,” he urged, calling for international attention to remain focused on human rights in Iran despite global distractions.
