Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has confirmed his decision to leave the African Democratic Congress.

Obi made the announcement in a statement shared on his X handle on Sunday.

Cites ‘Toxic’ Political Environment

In the statement, Obi described the current political climate as hostile and discouraging.

“We now live in an environment that has become increasingly toxic… where intimidation, insecurity, endless scrutiny, and discouragement have become normal,” he said.

He added that even within political alliances, individuals sometimes face unexpected opposition and criticism.

Distances Decision From Party Leaders

Obi clarified that his decision was not influenced by any personal issues with party leaders, including David Mark and Atiku Abubakar.

“My decision to leave the ADC is not because… any respected leaders did anything personally wrong to me,” he stated.

Blames Internal Crisis, Legal Battles

The former governor said recurring internal disputes and legal challenges within the party influenced his exit.

“Endless court cases, internal battles, suspicion, and division… instead of focusing on deeper national problems,” he noted.

He likened the situation to earlier challenges he faced within the Labour Party.

‘Leadership Is About Service’

Obi reaffirmed his belief in leadership as service, stressing that he has never used power to oppress others.

“Leadership has always been about service, sacrifice, and helping others rise,” he said.

Not Driven By Political Ambition

He also dismissed suggestions that his actions were driven by personal ambition.

“I am not desperate to be President, Vice President, or Senate President,” Obi said.

Instead, he emphasised his desire to see improvements in security, economic conditions, and citizens’ welfare.

Reaffirms Hope For Nigeria

Despite the challenges, Obi said he remains hopeful about Nigeria’s future.

“I firmly believe that Nigeria can still become a country with competent leadership based on justice, compassion, and equal opportunity for all,” he added.

Opposition Realignment Deepens

Obi’s exit is expected to further reshape the opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections, as political alignments continue to evolve.
