Onuachu extends Super Lig goal drought

Paul Onuachu extended his goal drought in the Turkish Super Lig after failing to find the net in Trabzonspor’s 1-1 home draw against Goztepe, a result that dealt a significant blow to their UEFA Champions League hopes, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Nigerian striker has now gone four consecutive matches without scoring, having also drawn blanks against Konyaspor, Samsunspor and Istanbul Basaksehir, managing just one goal in his last seven outings.

Despite the recent dip, Onuachu remains the league’s top scorer with 22 goals in 27 appearances, maintaining a two-goal advantage over his closest rival with two matches left in the campaign.

The 31-year-old had enjoyed a prolific run following his return from the Africa Cup of Nations, when he scored 13 goals in 11 of his 12 appearances across all competitions, including contributions in domestic cup fixtures.

However, his recent drought has coincided with a downturn in form for Trabzonspor, who have struggled for consistency in attack during the closing stages of the season.

Overall, Onuachu has registered 24 goals and two assists in all competitions, averaging a goal every 110 minutes across 2,419 minutes of league action, with a scoring rate of 0.8 goals per game.

His goals have largely come from inside the penalty area, accounting for 21 of his 22 league strikes, while he has also proved a dominant aerial presence, scoring nine times with his head.

The forward has netted 13 goals with his right foot this season and is yet to score with his left.

Trabzonspor currently sit third on 66 points from 32 matches, trailing second-placed Fenerbahce by four points after their rivals secured victory on Saturday to strengthen their position behind league leaders Galatasaray.

With only two rounds remaining, Onuachu will be aiming to rediscover his scoring touch as Trabzonspor seek to finish the season strongly and keep their slim Champions League hopes alive.
