2027: ADC vows to present credible candidates

The African Democratic Congress has said it will present “credible, competent and widely acceptable candidates” for all elective positions in the 2027 elections.

The party dismissed reports suggesting it may be excluded or unable to field candidates in the election, describing them as unfounded.

In a statement on Saturday by the National Publicity Secretary of the ADC, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said it remained fully prepared and focused on strengthening its structures ahead of the polls.

The clarification follows mixed reactions trailing a recent ruling by the Supreme Court on the party’s leadership crisis, which had sparked speculation about its ability to participate in the 2027 elections.

There were also reports that some opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, alongside other ADC leaders, were considering defecting to another political platform.

Reacting, the ADC described the claims as “entirely unfounded, mischievous and designed to create confusion.”

“The African Democratic Congress wishes to state clearly and unequivocally that we remain focused on our mission to rescue Nigeria from the failure of the APC-led government and to prevent a dangerous slide toward a one-party state.

“We have taken note of recent suggestions that the ADC will not produce candidates in the 2027 elections. We find such claims to be entirely unfounded. They have no basis in law, in fact or in the reality of our preparations as a political party,” the statement read.

The party maintained that there was no legal impediment to its participation in the elections, stressing that it remained compliant with constitutional and electoral provisions.

“Let us be clear: the ADC will present candidates in the 2027 general elections. Not just candidates, but credible, competent and nationally acceptable candidates capable of leading this country out of its current crisis,” Abdullahi said.

He added that the party remained committed to its role as a leading opposition platform, noting that it was intensifying efforts to mobilise Nigerians and build grassroots structures nationwide.

“We are not distracted by noise. We are focused on the real work—organising across the country, mobilising Nigerians who are tired of insecurity, rising cost of living and limited opportunities, and building the structures required not just to contest, but to win,” he added.

The party urged its members and supporters to disregard what it described as baseless speculation, insisting that it remained on course to challenge for power in 2027.
