12 Rescued Chibok Girls Set For American University Graduation

Twelve years after the abduction of 276 students from Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, a group of 12 survivors is set to graduate from the American University of Nigeria (AUN), Yola.

Naija News reports that the students, who were among those abducted by insurgents on April 14, 2014, have now completed their academic programmes at the institution, marking a significant milestone in their recovery and reintegration.

While 57 of the girls escaped on the night of the abduction and several others have since regained their freedom, more than 80 are still believed to be missing, according to recent figures.

Speaking with journalists on Wednesday at the university campus, the President of AUN, Dewayne Frazier, described the impending graduation as a powerful symbol of hope and resilience.

“The graduation of several students who were formerly held captive in the Sambisa Forest symbolises more than academic achievement; it is a global testament to resilience, hope, and the indomitable human spirit,

“Their journey from captivity to a university degree has captured worldwide attention as a victory over adversity.”

Frazier noted that the achievement underscores the transformative power of education, particularly for individuals who have experienced trauma.

“These graduates now stand as beacons of light for the North-East and the world. Their success sends a powerful message: education is the most proven tool for healing and transformation, capable of reclaiming lives and building a brighter, more secure future for Nigeria,” he added.

The AUN president also commended the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs for sponsoring the education of the students, describing the intervention as critical to their success.
