Kebbi ADC chair: Police defend detention, cite court order

The Kebbi State Police Command has dismissed allegations of unlawful detention levelled against it by the State Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, Sufiyanu Bala, insisting that his custody is in full compliance with a valid court order.

In a press release issued on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, stated that Bala is being held based on a remand order granted by the Chief Magistrate Court in Birnin Kebbi.

 According to the statement, the order mandates his detention pending his appearance before the court on Monday, April 27, 2026, for further proceedings.

“The Command categorically refutes reports alleging unlawful detention of Engr. Sufiyanu Bala,” the statement read.

It emphasised that his custody “is solely pursuant to judicial directive and not an arbitrary or unlawful action by the police.”

The police further disclosed that shortly after being taken into custody, Bala requested medical attention. Authorities said the request was promptly honoured, and he was taken to a medical facility in Birnin Kebbi, where he is currently receiving appropriate care.

Reaffirming its commitment to due process, the Command stressed its adherence to the rule of law and respect for judicial authority.

It also urged members of the public to disregard what it described as misinformation surrounding the case and rely only on verified facts from official sources.

The clarification by the police comes amid rising concern and public debate over Bala’s arrest and detention, particularly from factions within the ADC in Kebbi State.

The party had earlier raised alarm over what it described as the “trial” and continued custody of its state chairman, calling on institutions such as the National Judicial Council, Amnesty International, and even international bodies to intervene.

Supporters of Balatave argued that his arrest may be politically motivated, given the heightened political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Our correspondent reports that Kebbi State, like many parts of Nigeria, has recently witnessed increased political mobilisation and rivalry among parties positioning for influence.

However, security authorities maintain that the matter is strictly a legal issue that should be allowed to follow due judicial process, even as  observers say the outcome of Bala’s court appearance on Monday will likely shape public perception and political reactions in the state.
