Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, on Saturday led a high-powered delegation to Giginyu Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area of the state for the formal registration of former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau as a member of the All Progressives Congress.

Shekarau’s registration attracted a large crowd of party supporters and residents, who thronged the venue in celebration, signalling renewed political realignments within the Kano APC.

This was contained in a statement issued on Saturday by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mustapha Muhammad.

According to the statement, Yusuf described Shekarau as a grassroots politician whose leadership had positively impacted many lives in Kano and beyond.

The governor said the former governor remained one of the most respected political figures in the state and northern Nigeria.

“Malam Ibrahim Shekarau is a man of the people who has touched the lives of many citizens through purposeful leadership and service,” Yusuf said.

He added, “His political pedigree and the respect he commands across Kano and northern Nigeria will further strengthen our party.”

Speaking after receiving his APC membership card, Shekarau said unity among party members would be critical to future electoral victories.

He pledged to work with other stakeholders to ensure Yusuf secures a second term in office in the 2027 general elections.

“Unity is the key to progress. We will work together to ensure victory for Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s second term bid and all APC candidates in future elections,” Shekarau said.

The event also witnessed the defection of ex-Senator Bello Hayatu Gwarzo into the APC alongside Shekarau.

Among dignitaries present were the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Jibrin Ismail Falgore; APC ex-officio member, Muhammad Jamu; Kano State APC Chairman, Haruna Umar Doguwa; and other party executives.

Shekarau had earlier resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party in a letter dated April 19, 2026, addressed to the PDP chairman of Giginyu Ward, announcing his decision to pursue his political career in another party.
