Roger Stokoe Goodell (born February 19, 1959) is an American businessman who has been the commissioner of the National Football League (NFL) since 2006.

Goodell started working for the NFL in 1982 as an administrative intern in the league office in New York, working under Commissioner Pete Rozelle. He got the job after sending letters to the league office and all 28 teams at the time. In 1983, he interned with the New York Jets, then went back to the league office in 1984 as a public relations assistant.
In 1987, Goodell became assistant to Lamar Hunt, president of the American Football Conference. Under Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, he worked in several football and business roles, eventually becoming the NFL’s executive vice president and chief operating officer in December 2001. As COO, Goodell managed football operations, officiating, and league business functions. He also led NFL Ventures, which handles the league’s media, marketing, stadium development, and planning.

Biography
Goodell was born in Jamestown, New York, on February 19, 1959, to U.S. Senator Charles Ellsworth Goodell and his first wife, Jean (née Rice) Goodell, from Buffalo. He graduated from Bronxville High School, where he played football, basketball, and baseball, captaining all three teams as a senior and earning the school’s athlete of the year award. Injuries prevented him from playing college football. Goodell graduated from Washington & Jefferson College in Pennsylvania in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science in Economics.

Personal life
In October 1997, Goodell married former Fox News Channel anchor Jane Skinner. They have twin daughters, born in 2001. Goodell has four brothers: among them are Tim, a senior vice president for the Hess Corporation, and Michael, married to Jack Kenny, creator of the short-lived NBC series The Book of Daniel. The Webster family on the show was loosely based on the Goodell family. Goodell’s cousin Andy Goodell was a former Republican Party member of the New York State Assembly and executive of Chautauqua County, New York.
