What should have been a period of consolidation for the party is fast turning into a test of survival, as insiders point to growing mistrust among key stakeholders.

Sources familiar with the development who spoke with Vanguard said the crisis is largely internal, fuelled by competing ambitions and unresolved suspicions.

A senior party insider said, “These are the real issues. It’s ego, it’s power, and it’s also about where the ticket should go. That’s what is tearing them apart.”

Two influential former governors have emerged as central figures in the unfolding power tussle, with their rivalry said to be deepening divisions within the party.

According to sources, one of them is opposed to a South-East candidate emerging as the party’s presidential flagbearer, a stance that has raised concerns about ethnic bias.

“He has never hidden it. He believes certain regions should not produce the president at this time, and that has become a serious issue,” a source said.

The second ex-governor is reportedly positioning himself as the most viable candidate with strong northern backing.

“He believes he is the only one who can win, and that the North will rally behind him more than anyone else,” another insider said.

The clash of ambitions has resulted in a stalemate, with insiders accusing key actors of prioritising personal interests over party success.

“They are not thinking about victory; they are thinking about themselves,” a source said.

Behind closed doors, the struggle is said to have shifted from building a coalition to securing the party’s presidential ticket.

“We built this structure, how do people just come in at the last minute and take over?” a source queried.

Another insider added, “This is not just about individuals. It’s about ownership of the party and who controls its future.”

Sources further revealed a disconnect between public popularity and internal acceptance among aspirants.

“Popularity outside is not the same as acceptance inside. What you see in the public space is different from what is happening within the party,” one source said.
