Nigeria will host its first-ever Solid Minerals Excellence Awards on May 14, 2026, in a move to spotlight the country’s fast-emerging mining sector and accelerate its shift from oil dependence.
The event, billed for the Abuja Continental Hotel and themed “Unlocking the Future,” is expected to convene policymakers, investors, diplomats and industry leaders to examine opportunities in what officials describe as Nigeria’s next economic frontier.
Endorsed by the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, the awards, also known as SOMEA, aim to recognise companies and individuals driving growth in the sector, particularly in areas such as lithium, gold, limestone and rare earth minerals.
Organisers said the initiative seeks to elevate an industry that has long operated outside the spotlight, despite its growing role in infrastructure and industrial development.
In an endorsement of the programme, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, said the awards would promote “responsible, safe, and sustainable mining practices” while strengthening transparency, investor confidence and Nigeria’s competitiveness globally.
Project Coordinator, Femi Da-silva, described the awards as a deliberate effort to reposition the sector, noting that it aims to bring “glamour, prestige, and national spotlight” to mining.
“We are highlighting the sector that will define the next century of Nigerian prosperity,” he said.
The awards will recognise excellence across multiple categories, including leading mining companies, sustainability practices and contributions to sectoral growth.
According to the organisers, the initiative comes at a time when the government is implementing reforms to formalise artisanal mining, improve safety standards and attract international investment.
They added that the platform would serve as a benchmark for Nigeria’s transition toward a diversified, post-oil economy.
“Nigeria is open for business, and our wealth is solid,” the statement said.
