John Michael “Ozzy” Osbourne (3 December 1948 – 22 July 2025) was an English singer, songwriter, and media personality. Known as the “Prince of Darkness,” he is often seen as a pioneer of heavy metal music. He helped start the band Black Sabbath in 1968 and became famous in the 1970s as their lead singer. He sang on the band’s first eight studio albums, including Black Sabbath, Paranoid (both 1970), and Master of Reality (1971). In 1979, he was fired from the band because of his struggles with alcohol and drugs.

Biography

John Michael Osbourne was born on 3 December 1948 at the maternity hospital in Marston Green, which was later demolished in the 1990s. At the time, Marston Green was part of Warwickshire. Osbourne grew up in Aston, an area in north-central Birmingham that was also in Warwickshire at the time. His mother, Lilian (née Unitt; 1916–2001), worked at a Lucas factory and was a non-observant Catholic. His father, John Thomas “Jack” Osbourne (1915–1977), worked night shifts as a toolmaker at General Electric. Osbourne had three older sisters, Jean, Iris, and Gillian, and two younger brothers, Paul and Tony. The family lived in a small two-bedroom house at 14 Lodge Road in Aston. As a child, Osbourne got the nickname “Ozzy.” He struggled with dyslexia at school, and his accent was described as a hesitant Brummie.

When Osbourne was 11, he was sexually abused by school bullies. As a teenager, he said he tried to take his own life several times. He took part in school plays, including Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado and H.M.S. Pinafore. At age 14, after hearing the Beatles’ first hit single, he became a fan and said their 1963 song “She Loves You” inspired him to become a musician.

Osbourne left school when he was 15 and worked a variety of jobs, including construction site labourer, trainee plumber, apprentice toolmaker, car factory horn-tuner, and slaughterhouse worker. At 17, he was convicted of robbing a clothes shop but could not pay the fine. His father refused to pay it to teach him a lesson, so Osbourne spent six weeks in Winson Green Prison.

Personal Life

Osbourne had over 15 tattoos. The first were the letters O-Z-Z-Y across the knuckles of his left hand, which he made himself as a teenager using a sewing needle and pencil lead.

In 2002, Osbourne and his wife Sharon attended the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner as guests of Fox News Channel correspondent Greta Van Susteren. President George W. Bush noticed Osbourne and joked, “The thing about Ozzy is, he’s made a lot of big hit recordings – ‘Party with the Animals’, ‘Sabbath Bloody Sabbath’, ‘Facing Hell’, ‘Black Skies’ and ‘Bloodbath in Paradise’. Osbourne also adopted Riley’s five-year-old son, Elliot, from a previous relationship. He later called his first marriage “a terrible mistake.” His drinking, drug use, and frequent absences while touring with Black Sabbath hurt his family life, and his children later said he was not a good father. In the 2011 documentary God Bless Ozzy Osbourne, made by his son Jack, Osbourne admitted he could not remember when Louis and Jessica were born. Louis later appeared in The Osbournes, and both he and Jessica became actors.

Osbourne started dating his manager, Sharon Arden. In 1981, guitarist Randy Rhoads predicted they would “probably get married someday,” even though they often argued and Osbourne was still married to Thelma. Ozzy and Sharon married on 4 July 1982. He later said they chose Independence Day so he would always remember their anniversary. They had three children: Aimee (born 2 September 1983), Kelly (born 27 October 1984), and Jack (born 8 November 1985). After Jack was born, Osbourne had a vasectomy. He also had many grandchildren. During their marriage, Osbourne had several extra-marital affairs. After Sharon found out about his four-year relationship with hairdresser Michelle Pugh, she attempted suicide.

Death

Osbourne died at his home in Buckinghamshire on the morning of 22 July 2025, at age 76, surrounded by his family. His death came 17 days after the Back to the Beginning farewell concert. The main cause was acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) and out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, with coronary artery disease and Parkinson’s disease with autonomic dysfunction as contributing factors.

Many public figures and musicians paid tribute to Osbourne. Elton John called him “a dear friend and a huge trailblazer who secured his place in the pantheon of rock gods – a true legend.”
