FG unveils compensation scheme for injured, deceased civil servants

The Federal Government has institutionalised a new compensation framework for civil servants who suffer work-related injuries, occupational diseases, disabilities, or death in the line of duty, in a move aimed at strengthening welfare and workplace protection across the Federal Civil Service.

This was disclosed in a statement on Thursday which was signed by the Director of Press, Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Eno Olotu.

The statement noted that the HCSF, Didi Walson-Jack, made the disclosure during the unveiling of the Employees’ Compensation Scheme Help Desk in Abuja, describing the initiative as a major welfare intervention for public servants.

According to her, the Employees’ Compensation Scheme has now been fully operationalised to ensure timely compensation and support for federal workers affected by workplace hazards.

“The Employees’ Compensation Scheme is a key intervention to provide timely compensation and support for Civil Servants affected by work-related injuries, diseases, disabilities, or death,” Walson-Jack said.

She explained that the scheme is designed to complement existing staff welfare programmes, including the Group Life Assurance Scheme, while widening protection for workers and their families.

“The Scheme complements existing welfare programmes, including the Group Life Assurance Scheme, while expanding protection for employees and their families,” she stated.

Walson-Jack said the development underscores the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to improving the welfare, dignity, and safety of public servants.

“The initiative reflects the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to safeguarding the well-being and dignity of Public Servants,” she added.

As part of the institutional framework for implementation, the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund to drive seamless execution of the programme.

Speaking at the event, the Managing Director of NSITF, Oluwaseyi Faleye, described the scheme as a major step toward establishing a structured and transparent compensation system for federal workers.

“The ECS is a major step toward institutionalising structured care and protection for Civil Servants, supported by a transparent, payroll-driven system,” Faleye said.

He added that the newly inaugurated ECS Help Desk would serve as a dedicated platform for information dissemination, claims processing support, and feedback management.

“The ECS Help Desk will provide information, claims support, and a feedback platform to enhance service delivery,” he noted.

The Federal Government said the rollout marks a significant milestone in reinforcing workforce protection and building a more efficient, responsive, and welfare-driven civil service.
