Tinubu, Buni, Geidam meeting fuels succession talks in Yobe

A high-level meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Tuesday has triggered fresh political discussions over succession planning in Yobe State, as Governor Mai Mala Buni approaches the end of his tenure.

President Bola Tinubu received Buni alongside the Minister of Police Affairs and former Yobe State governor, Ibrahim Geidam. While the meeting was officially described as focusing on development and security in the state, credible sources familiar with the discussions said succession planning formed a significant part of the deliberations.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Director-General of Press and Media Affairs to the Governor, Mamman Mohammed, the talks centred on strengthening collaboration between the Federal Government and Yobe State, with emphasis on infrastructure development and improved security to sustain ongoing initiatives.

Tinubu was said to have commended both Buni and Geidam for their commitment to the growth and stability of the state, while reiterating the Federal Government’s readiness to support subnational efforts aimed at improving living standards and addressing security challenges in the North-East.

The PUNCH gathered that, despite the official tone of the communiqué, insiders indicated that political succession was a key undercurrent of the meeting.

With Buni nearing the end of his constitutionally permitted tenure, consultations are reportedly intensifying within the ruling structure on who will emerge as his successor.

Geidam, who governed the state before Buni, is believed to remain a significant figure in Yobe politics, fuelling speculation that the meeting may have served as a platform for early consensus-building among key stakeholders.

Although no official confirmation has been made regarding succession discussions, the timing of the meeting and the presence of influential political actors have reinforced perceptions that strategic planning for Yobe’s next leadership phase is underway.

Meanwhile, findings indicate that several aspirants are already positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 governorship race.

Among them is Senator Ibrahim Bomai, regarded as a strong grassroots mobiliser with significant community engagement, whose profile has continued to rise amid discussions of a possible zoning shift to Yobe South.

Also in contention is Abubakar Aliyu, a former Minister of Power, seen as representing continuity within the Geidam–Buni political structure.

Senator Musa Mustapha remains influential within the traditional power bloc in the state and is similarly viewed as part of the continuity camp within the ruling party.

Former Senate President Ahmad Lawan is also being mentioned in political circles, with his national stature and federal connections seen as factors in the succession dynamics.

The Secretary to the State Government, Baba Mallam Wali, is considered an experienced institutional figure with extensive administrative experience across multiple administrations.

In addition, Kashim Tumsah, a lawyer and diplomat, is emerging as a technocratic option, attracting support from youth groups and reform-minded stakeholders advocating competence-driven leadership.

With the governorship primaries of the All Progressives Congress fixed for May 23, 2026, the coming days before the primaries are critical in determining the direction of Yobe’s leadership transition and the balance of power within the state’s ruling structure.
