Kano Coalition Alleges Plot To Sabotage Barau’s 2027 Senate Bid

The Kano State Coalition for Good Governance on Wednesday alleged a plot by unnamed political actors to undermine the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group, which said it has members across the 44 local government areas of Kano State, declared support for Barau’s re-election, warning against attempts to destabilise his political base.

Speaking at a press briefing in Kano, the coalition’s chairman, Mukhar Tukur Gadanya, claimed that “disgruntled elements” within and outside the state were mobilising resources to challenge the senator’s popularity.

“We have credible information about a plot by some elements to thwart the will of the people of Kano North Senatorial District by sponsoring opposition against Senator Barau,” Gadanya said.

He alleged that the move was driven by selfish political interests, but expressed confidence that the senator would overcome any challenge due to what he described as widespread grassroots support.

The coalition highlighted Barau’s legislative record, stating that he has sponsored and co-sponsored nearly 50 bills and facilitated development projects across Kano State.

It listed some of the interventions to include educational support programmes, infrastructure projects, and agricultural assistance to farmers.

According to the group, beneficiaries have also received local and foreign scholarships, while rural communities have benefited from fertiliser distribution and solar streetlight projects.

Gadanya further alleged that a ‘failed politician’ had been recruited to contest against Barau as part of efforts to weaken his political influence, although he did not name the individual.

He called on those allegedly involved in the plot to desist and urged political actors to allow the democratic process to take its course.

The coalition also commended President Bola Tinubu for his support for the senator and Kano State.
