A former Public Relations Officer of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Zone D, and presidential aspirant, Awoyinfa Opeoluwa, popularly known as OPIANO, has pledged student-centred leadership if he becomes the next president of the association.

He stated this on Saturday in Abuja when he successfully completed the mandatory screening exercise conducted by the Independent Convention Planning Committee ahead of the 2026 convention.

Opeoluwa, a PhD student at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, appeared before the Screening and Verification Sub-committee, where he presented his credentials and reaffirmed his eligibility for the race.

Speaking to reporters after the exercise, Opeoluwa described the outcome as significant for his ambition and the future of the student body.

“The successful completion of today’s screening is not just a personal victory, but a step closer to the liberation and revitalisation of NANS,” he said.

The aspirant, who is campaigning under the IMPACT Movement with the slogan “Vox Populi, Vox Dei,” outlined his priorities if elected.

“We will end factionalism by restoring unity and independence to the student body. We will also prioritise welfare advocacy by tackling tuition hikes and improving campus living conditions through direct collaboration with Student Union Government presidents,” he said.

“Our leadership will be inclusive and student-centred, ensuring that every voice is heard and valued,” he added.

The NANS national convention is scheduled to hold between May 20, and May 27, 2026, with the election expected to produce a new leadership for the student body. Opeoluwa’s successful screening positions him among key contenders in the race.
