2027: Supporters push Obi-Kwankwaso joint ticket

Supporters of former Kano State Governor and New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, national leader, Rabiu Kwankwaso, have formally proposed a joint presidential ticket featuring Peter Obi and Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The call, which was made on Friday in Kano State, comes amid intensifying manoeuvres within the opposition camps to build broader alliances capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, and President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.

Addressing newsmen on behalf of various Kwankwaso support groups, Abba Sadauki Gwale said the proposed Obi-Kwankwaso ticket was designed to forge a powerful national coalition by merging the strong southern followership of Peter Obi — former presidential candidate of the Labour Party — with Kwankwaso’s deep roots in the northern political landscape.

Mr Gwale argued that the alliance could offer Nigerians a credible alternative to what he described as “years of insecurity, hunger and hardship under the current administration,” stressing that regional strengths could be harnessed for national progress.

“As loyal followers of Senator Kwankwaso, we urge Nigerians to back an Obi-Kwankwaso alliance,” he declared, adding that the partnership could cut across party lines if necessary.

The spokesman added that the joint ticket, if actualised, would aim to deliver meaningful change by addressing pressing socioeconomic challenges, including economic reform and youth empowerment.

While the proposal has sparked discussion in political circles and among online commentators, neither Mr Obi nor Mr Kwankwaso has issued an official response or endorsement of the idea. Political analysts note that past efforts to unite the two political figures stumbled over leadership disputes and differences in party loyalty.

The development comes at a time when many Nigerians are watching closely as opposition forces consider various realignments in a bid to reshape the electoral landscape ahead of the 2027 polls.
